Your MERI remote control mower may arrive without fuel or engine oil, and its electrical power may be disconnected for transport. That is normal preparation for shipping, but it means the engine should not be started as soon as the machine is unpacked. This remote control mower first start guide keeps the original six-step process and explains what to check before the first controlled test.
Quick answer: do not start until these checks are complete
- Remove packaging and transport restraints, then inspect the machine for damage or loose parts.
- Confirm the delivered model, engine, controller and accessories against the order.
- Add the correct engine oil and fuel specified for the delivered engine.
- Identify the air-cleaner type and service it exactly as its instructions require.
- Reconnect the electrical system and prepare the remote-controller battery.
- Read the supplied manuals before a low-speed test in a clear area.
1. Inspect the mower immediately after delivery
Place the machine on stable, level ground before removing its packaging. Take photos of the crate or frame, the machine and any visible damage while everything is still in its delivered condition. Remove transport restraints and loose packing materials carefully; do not mistake a shipping restraint for a permanent machine part.
Confirm that the mower model, engine, remote controller and accessories match the order documents. Look for fluid leakage, bent guards, damaged wiring, loose connectors, missing fasteners or visible damage to the tracks and cutting system. Do not operate a damaged machine. Photograph the issue and contact MERI or the supplying dealer before continuing.

| Arrival check | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Model and engine | Start-up methods, oil, fuel and controls can differ by configuration. | Nameplate, engine label and order reference. |
| Controller and accessories | The operator needs the correct controller, charger, manuals and ordered items. | Items received and anything missing. |
| Transport condition | Early photos separate delivery damage from later operating damage. | Crate condition, leaks, bent parts, loose wiring or hardware. |
2. Add engine oil and the correct fuel
International transport requirements may mean the mower is shipped without fuel or engine oil. Never assume that oil has already been added. Keep the machine level, use the oil grade and quantity stated in the supplied engine manual, and confirm the final level with the specified checking method. Too little or too much oil can both create problems.
Add only the correct gasoline or diesel fuel for the engine fitted to the delivered machine. Refuel outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, away from flames, sparks and hot surfaces. Secure the cap and remove spilled fuel before starting. If the engine label and the order documents do not make the required oil or fuel clear, stop and ask MERI or the dealer rather than guessing.
3. Identify the air cleaner and reconnect power
Air cleaners are not all serviced in the same way. An oil-bath air cleaner needs clean oil in its lower cup only to the marked level. A dry paper element must not be filled with oil, while foam and combination elements must be prepared according to the delivered engine instructions. Confirm the actual air-cleaner type before adding anything.

Restore the mower’s battery or electrical connection as supplied. Prepare the remote-controller battery and follow the documented power-on and pairing order for that controller. Check that the emergency-stop buttons are released only when the instructions call for it. Do not improvise wiring or bypass a safety control to make the machine start.
4. Read the manuals and learn the controls
Read the MERI User Manual, the engine manual and the controller instructions before use. Locate the machine and controller emergency stops, engine start and stop controls, throttle, choke or decompression control where fitted, travel controls, cutting-system control and cutting-height control. The exact set of controls depends on the delivered configuration.

Then use the MERI Operation and Maintenance Video Center to find the video matching your engine and controller. A video is useful for seeing the sequence, but the manuals supplied with the exact machine remain the primary reference.
5. Complete a controlled first start
Stop immediately if there is abnormal noise, vibration, smoke, leakage, damaged hardware or unreliable control. Isolate the machine and identify the cause before continuing. A successful engine start does not prove that every travel, cutting and safety function is ready for work.
6. Start the maintenance record on day one
Record the delivery date, model, engine, controller, starting hour-meter reading and the checks completed before first use. Note the oil and fuel used, the air-cleaner type and any support advice received. This creates a clean baseline for service work and warranty communication.

Before each job, check the engine-oil level, fuel system, air cleaner, blades or flails, fasteners, guards, tracks, belts, wiring, controller and emergency stop. After use, isolate power, allow hot parts to cool, remove grass and debris, and inspect for leaks, loose bolts, damaged cutting parts and abnormal wear. Dust, heat and heavy commercial work may require more frequent inspection.
For service procedures and intervals, use the remote control crawler mower maintenance guide together with the manuals delivered with the machine.
Keep the quick-start card with the machine documents
The printed A5 Machine Arrival Quick Start Guide gives operators the same six-step sequence at a glance. Keep it with the User Manual, engine manual, Maintenance and Service Record and warranty card. If several people operate the mower, make sure each person completes the handover before using it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start the mower as soon as it is unpacked?
No. First inspect the delivery, remove transport restraints, confirm oil and fuel requirements, prepare the correct air cleaner, reconnect power and read the supplied instructions.
How do I know which engine oil and fuel to use?
Use the engine label and the manual supplied with the delivered engine. Do not choose a fluid from another mower model or from a general online video.
Should I put oil in the air filter?
Only an oil-bath cleaner requires oil in its lower cup. Do not add oil to a dry paper-filter housing. Identify the fitted type and follow its engine instructions.
What should I send if I need start-up support?
Send the mower model, serial or order reference, engine label, controller type and clear photos of the engine, air cleaner, connections and any problem area.
Need help before the first start?
If the oil, fuel, air-cleaner type, wiring connection or controller sequence is unclear, do not guess. Send MERI the machine details and clear photos so the correct procedure can be confirmed.
